Horndon on the Hill Midweek Indoor 2nd X1 v Grays & Chadwell on Thu 06 Mar 2008 at 9.00 pm
Horndon on the Hill Lost 3 runs

A case of so near but yet so far for the 2's as they lost to Poulton & Chadwell by the narrowest of margins.
Horndon did well to restrict Grays to 105 from their 12 overs, with "Mini-Clark" bowling well again and Barney picking up 2 wickets.Other than the one man team of Ross Poulton, only Dave Gaylor really troubled the scorers at the end and he played well to push Grays past the 100 mark.
Walshy and Ted got Horndon's reply off to a good start but Walshy was unlucky to play on to his stumps which left Ted and Willsy at the crease -- Ted retired on 25 and Willsy made a fairly quick 18 to keep things moving. At the halfway stage Horndon were on 55 for 1,but Barney came in and threw his wicket away quickly and the momentum tilted back towards Grays. Young Clarky did well with Willsy to keep Horndon in touch and after the 9th over the boys needed 32 to win with 3 overs remaining.Lewis pushed things along after Willsy's departure and then Ted returned in the 11th over and bashed a six to put Horndon back in the driving seat.
With 7 runs required from the last over and 2 wickets in hand Horndon looked favourites to win,but Ross Poulton had other ideas. Ted hit a single from the first ball but on the second he pushed the ball to the wall and ran but Lewis was run-out by a very lucky football kick by the fielder, which was a direct hit. With 4 balls left and 5 runs required,Ted again pushed the ball in the gap and ran but was the victim of a very "dubious" run-out at the bowlers end, which one or two onlookers said was not out,but the ferocity of the Grays' team appeal was such that the umpire gave it. Their raucous celebrations at the end of the game were a little over the top but it will probably be the only thing they'll win all season,so perhaps it's understandable.
All is not lost however as there are still 2 games to be played and we did pick up 11 points,so still all to play for ...
