Horndon on the Hill Lost Saffron walden win by 64 runs
Our first Matchplay game of the 2008 campaign got off to a losing start but did not pass by without positives. Skipper Ryan Plom won the toss and inserted Saffron Walden on a pitch that was barely playable 24 hours before. With the outfield slow it was important that Horndon bowled the ball in the right areas to limit Saffron's opportunities. Luke Clenence opened the innings and dismissed the opener with the very 1st ball of the game. Scoring was hard for Saffron and with 20 overs bowled only 68 runs were on the board. Drinks came and so did the runs. The Saffron opener A Laws took to some loose fielding and bowling from the Horndon side and rattled off to 111 before being run out by Gary Ginsburg. Although Ryan Plom bowled well at the end and finished with 3 for 40 off 8 which included a hatrick ball the last 20 over went for 140.
Batting was always going to be a huge task for our young side and pride needed to be restored. Luke Clemence fell early for 5 and Jo Joyce with Ryan Plom soon realised that winning the game was beyond them with the tight bowling and fielding from the visitors. With the score at 72 for 1 at 20 overs an innings similar to one produced by Laws was needed but the bowling from the visitors did not offer this. With overs running out both players tried to be as positive as possible. Jo Joyce eventually fell for 31 but Ryan Plom managed to carry his bat for a creditable 81 not out. Horndon's total was 164 for 4 losing by 64 runs.
