Horndon's under 16 Matchplay team returned to winning ways on Sunday with an excellent win over Gidea Park and Romford. After losing the 1st round game to Saffron Walden this was a critical game for the borough side.
Horndon skipper Ryan Plom won the toss and elected to field in the hot and humid conditions. With good fielding and tight bowling Gidea Park found scoring difficult due to good opening spells by Luke Clements and Connor Cutts. The 1st wicket fell to Cutts trapping Stephen Lbw. Opener E Skinner proved to be a difficult batsman to remove batting for 30 plus overs for a score of 54. The pick of the Horndon bowling had to be skipper Plom who bowled 7 overs for 21 runs picking up 5 wickets. He was supported well but 13 year old Connor Pricewho finished with 1 wicket for 6 runs off 6 overs and Frankie Paisley who picked up 2 wickets for 11 runs off 3 overs.
Chasing a score of 146 would have been a comfortable chase, or so you would have thought. Opener Cutts fell for 0 and fellow opener Ginsburg fell for 9. Number 3 Plom would need to have an inspiring batting performance to match the bowling if Horndon were to win this game. Although tense for some time Plom started to take the attack to GPR and finally hit the winning boundary with 9 overs to spare finishing on 91 not out which included 2 sixes and 9 fours. Once again he was supported by Connor Price who hung around to finish 19 not out. Horndon entertain Billericay on Sunday in another crucial match.
